If you’re like me, you’re always lamenting that there isn’t enough protein in your meals. You’re adding protein powder to your oatmeal or your smoothies, you’re hoarding protein-infused peanut butter (it’s a thing); you’re smirking at people eating their meatless-salads, like they hate muscles or something.
Or maybe you’re like a good portion of the world who are always looking for ways to get caffeine into their systems. You’re one of those people who drinks coffee all day long and can actually have an espresso after dinner without bouncing off the walls.
Well, I’ve determined during my time on earth that the best way to wake up in the morning is by ingesting both protein AND caffeine, and it looks like GNC has figured out a new way to do this. Nature’s Best JavaPro is a whey protein complex infused with coffee. That’s right: caffeinated, coffee-flavoured protein powder. Your frappucinos and coffee smoothies just got more muscular.
I picked mine up in the States, as I don’t think you can get it in Canada at the moment; it comes in a few flavours, including caramel, hazelnut and vanilla, but I got the basic espresso version. Upon opening it, you can actually see the flecks of ground coffee in the mix and it has a subtle, not-too-sweet coffee aroma. For my first try, I mixed the recommended serving (containing 80mg of caffeine and 20g of protein) with some ice and unsweetened almond milk, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It has a definite, real coffee taste without being too sweet; I later tried it with some added cocoa powder and chocolate almond milk for a mocha smoothie and it was even better.
I’m not sure this product is your absolute best bet for a high-quality protein powder, or a high-quality caffeine source, but it’s a novel, tasty vehicle for both, and a nice addition to your under-the-sink protein powder collection (what, I’m not the only one who has one!). If you like muscles and you like caffeine—and who doesn’t like both—JavaPro’s a nice treat.
