Guys, have you ever heard of Impulse Cosmetics? They’re a Pennsylvania based cosmetics company that makes eyeshadow, nailpolish, and the most stunning lipsticks ever. Their bright, completely off-the-wall and matte colours are my favourite – seriously, go to their website and just check out all the colours. It’s nuts. Some of them are perfectly fine to wear for a ladies night out, while others might be more relegated to “theme party” or Halloween, but they’re all fun. AND they’re only about $7 each, so you can afford to buy a couple and play around with them.
Before we look at the lipsticks I chose, a few things to note: these do go on very opaque and very matte. They absolutely deliver on what they say they’re going to do, and that’s great. Potential downsides include: they do tend to be a bit drying, so make sure your lips are nice and moisturized beforehand. Also, the product comes out flat, like lip balm vs the pointed style of a lipstick, so they can be tough to apply accurately – especially if you have an intense cupid’s bow like I do. You do NOT want florescent green lipstick all over your face, so I highly recommend using a lip brush to apply.
*Also note, I’m wearing very little makeup in these pictures aside from the lipstick, with no retouching (obviously, because I have no idea how to do that). Most of these lipsticks would benefit from a more made-up face, but A) I’m lazy and B) I figured this way you could really see what the colours look like.
The first one I tried was actually part of their Metaluxe series, called Infatuation. These are metallic, almost two-tone shades. Despite the common-knowledge that metallic, frosty lipstick is a no-no, metallics are pretty hot these days and I really wanted to see if it looked as eye-catching in real life as it did on the website. I surprisingly liked this one; it’s pretty metallic looking, but easily wearable.
Next up is from the Opaque Matte collection, called Girl Talk. This one is a creamy lavender shade that’s pretty popular in fashion right now and I think works for me pretty well. It’s bright and vivid but not too crazy looking. I was a fan.
Medusa is another opaque matte, and this one has serious 90′s grunge overtones (which also happen to be so hot right now – have you seen all the Doc Martens and plaid shirts everyone’s rocking these days?). This one really made my eyes pop and harkened back to my junior high days when I would play up what I thought was my best feature by wearing super dark lipstick all the time. I really liked this one!
Taking it a step further, Melancholy brought me almost into 90′s goth territory, with a deep, almost bruise-like purple. This one’s a bit more intense; while a lot of people can rock it, I think I’d need a particular reason to go out wearing this one.
Finally, we go into the complete other direction with this dayglo shade called Metro. Depending on the light, this one went from opaque cotton candy pink to nearly glowing in the dark. It definitely made me look instantly more tanned, and with a little muted gloss overtop it was less bold. A fun one, but probably not an everyday shade.
Have you tried any colours from Impulse? Which one of these is your favourite? Let me know in the comments!
