A great drink to me is something a little bit unexpected. A year or so ago my friends introduced me to the Old Fashioned and it was nothing like I imagined: both sweeter and smoother. Coupled with the act of watching the bitters being muddled with sugar and the expert mixing of ice, bourbon and bitters made this drink something special. Throwing in that maraschino cherry at the end is the perfect mix of kitsch, old-timeyness and classic deliciousness. For me it’s the nostalgia of a Shirley Temple, but the grown-up, big-gal version. While there are a few variations, here is my version of the classic Old Fashioned:
- 1/2 tsp of white sugar
- 2 dashes of bitters
- 2 oz of bourbon
- 2 cubes of ice
- 2 orange slices (*plus curled rind if you are feeling extra fancy)
- maraschino cherry
Directions: Muddle the sugar and the bitters until the sugar is entirely coloured light orange. Add the bourbon, ice and accoutrement. Consume.
