This is old news: I’m obsessed with cardamom. Ever since my first cardamom-scented coffee experience, I’ve been hooked, and I want to smell it/taste it/live it in every possible way. I’ve been eyeing this Royal Rose Cardamom-Clove Simple Syrup for awhile now, only hesitating in buying it because I never make cocktails at home. I barely even drink (I know, I’m really boring). But after talking to some bitters/simple syrup experts on the myriad uses for this stuff, I picked some up. I bought mine at Easy Tiger Goods in Toronto, but I’ve seen them at CatBird in Brooklyn and you can order them online. It’s supposed to be great in bourbon cocktails, but also to flavour your sparkling water or to add to your ice cream. So yeah, they had me at ice cream.
The cool thing about this stuff is that it’s not overpowering, although a little goes a long way; it’s not super sweet either, so don’t expect your sparkling water to taste like soda when you add a touch of this stuff. It adds a spicy, nuanced flavour that stands on its own without drowning out the taste of your spirit (or, in my case, ice cream). This stuff also makes a great gift for the foodie or cocktail lover in your life, and it comes in other fun flavours too, like lavender-lemon and strawberry fennel. The sky is the limit in how you can use simple syrup, from cooking to baking to getting drunk–or all three, if you have the energy. Oh, the possibilities!
